Why the Rising needs the exact time and place

The Earth turns once a day, so a new sign rises in the east roughly every two hours. Born at 9:00 or at 11:00, you can have different Rising signs - and at the same minute in Rome and in New York too, because the horizon depends on where you stand.

That is why the Ascendant needs your birth time and city, while the Sun only needs the date. Don't know the exact time? Look at your birth certificate or ask your family: the nearest hour is usually enough.

How we calculate it

The same way the Astroscope app does. Your local birth time is converted to universal time with the historical time-zone rules of your city, daylight saving included. The positions of the Sun and the Moon come from an astronomical ephemeris for that moment, in the tropical zodiac; the Ascendant is the degree of the ecliptic rising on the eastern horizon of your birth place.

Questions about the Big Three

What is my rising sign?

Your rising sign (Ascendant) is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. To find it you need three things: the date, the exact time and the city of birth. Enter them above - the calculator puts it on the left of your wheel.

Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?

Not reliably: the Rising changes about every two hours, so without the time it could be almost any sign. Without the time the calculator still shows your Sun and Moon - and tells you if the Moon changed signs on your birthday.

Why is my Moon sign different on another site?

The Moon moves fast - about one sign every two and a half days. If it changed signs on your birthday, the result depends on the hour. Sites that ignore the time or the time zone can put it in the neighbouring sign.

What does the Big Three mean?

The Sun shows who you are, the Moon - what you need to feel good, the Ascendant - the first impression you make. Read together, they describe you far more precisely than the Sun sign alone.
